Sodium citrate is used as an anticoagulant in activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) and prothrombin time (PT) testing, as well as the classic Westergren ESR. In blood collection tubes, the correct anticoagulant-to-whole-blood ratio of one part anticoagulant to nine parts whole blood is critical.
